A month or so ago, a friend asked me “What would you do if you were not afraid?” The question stuck in my mind for ages afterwards as I wondered if I’ve been holding back in any area because of fear. Would I be further in my career? Married? Living abroad? A better and more open friend? A more experienced human being?
When I think about fear I remember one of my favourite passages of scripture – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”(2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV) As a Christian I believe this word is true but it does not stop me from feeling fearful.
That four letter word ‘fear’ can stop you from taking a leap of faith. It makes us imagine what might happen and allows that to become a reason not to attempt the journey. Often in life we are faced with opportunities with higher stakes and greater rewards.
American author Susan Jeffer’s bestselling self help book ‘Feel the Fear and do it anyway’ is a noteworthy book about success, satisfaction and accomplishment. I love that phrase -”feel the fear and do it anyway” – and I want to challenge everyone reading this to do that.
So, what are you searching for? Waiting for or hoping for? What dream just keeps calling your name? What dream keeps you awake at night? You are alive if you are reading this so it is not too late. If your looking for inspiration from others, then look no further than the bible, a book full of great men and women just like you and me who overcame great obstacles of fear in their day.
The truth is every day presents another mini new year in which to feel the fear and do something new anyway. Remember only the living can praise God, likewise only the living can run after their dreams, so start today and take it one step at a time.
